Specialized Bicarbonates for Pharmaceutical Uses

The bicarbonate ion is a vital component of human physiology. Internally, it helps maintain blood pH; transports carbon dioxide from body tissue to the lungs for exhalation; neutralizes stomach contents as they enter the intestinal tract; and as a saliva component, it helps reduce the attack of orally-generated acids on tooth enamel.

Perhaps because of these physiological attributes, ARM & HAMMER™ brand bicarbonates are used in numerous pharmaceutical applications as active ingredients, excipients or intermediates. For example, as an active ingredient, sodium bicarbonate is used in antacids, acidosis controllers, bowel evacuants and electrolyte replacement products.  As an excipient, it is used for effervescence and tablet disintegration. As an intermediate, sodium bicarbonate is used as a neutralizer and buffer.
